Show 121: by Tilos Radio

The next Radia show by Tilos is a complete mix of the synthetic and the organic the first part is a live performance by Hungarian artist Mike Rosoft at the UltraSound Festival (Budapest, 2007 Spring). Attila Kenyeres is using his Apple computer to make soundscapes, and his first album at the Hungarian netlabel Syrup is called An Hour.

To make a full proof of what the Machintosh is good for in case of no matter how wet or dry weather, the second part is a fluid sample from the Thematic Day on the Danube at Tilos. It features Hungarian poet Attila József’s poem At the Danube first in Romanian, then in a 4-voice chorus in Hungarian with the sounds of a walk at the Danube in the background. (Although we don’t speak any Romanian here either – you’ll hear how easier it is to understand if you know French, Italian or other Latin-related languages than our Finno-Ugrian original – and that is not only because the Hungarian voice is quadruple.) The Romanian version is poetry and language for its own sake accompanied by music exclusively following the mood of the recital.

Show 098: A Journey Through Found Sound by Sanyi

– a trip through languages on all sorts of vehicles –
a mix by Sanyi from the literary show Irodalmi lépegetö at Tilos Radio.Mainly English and French archival sound with some Hungarian and Welsh here and there – mixed with music.
Starting with Nina Simone’s French rendering of Ne me quittez pas on the musical front, and Eliot’s Family Reunion on the textual, it plunges into a verbal mix of radio-history, a trip to London – with both Big Ben songs being Hungarian jazz compositions from the sixties – however unlikely it may sound. With Fernand a Londres we switch into French, and fly on with their version of the Apollo 11 trip to arrive back on the Earth with the help of Nicole Louvier. We land in Barcelona, and take an oldschool automobile just to arrive in the office of gangbusters in chicago. And we say good bye with Ella scatting Good Enough to Keep – just to make sense of this jumble of communication forms. (And don’t worry, the only Hungarian you can hear is spoken by some German friends of mine)

Irodalmi Lépegetö is the Sunday afternoon literary show at Budapest’s Tilos Radio, usually using Hungarian texts with different styles of music corresponding to the atmosphere of the spoken word. Also organising live events with writers performing to musical and visual background.

Show 076: sonictags

Since the current Radia Show is aired on the week of our Radio Territories conference: Media-Space-Society, our contribution is a mix of works produced for the 2nd Budapest RT workshop, featuring soundscapes by listeners and community radio broadcasters.
Our working group consisted of Tilos and other local community radio broadcasters, who – along with listeners set out to artistically conquer the Budapest airwaves with their small radio transmitters and special contents.
It is a mix of excerpts from works by Tamás Opitz (listener, videoartist) using Spanish language political speeches, Tomanek (Tilos broadcaster) walking in the rain with Grace Jones, Tamás Kenderes (listener, electric engineer) reinterpreting the great War of the Worlds and Gabriel Dubuc (listener, intermedia artist) recording the atmosphere of a local Spanish language nursery school and a singing fest.

Show 050: The adventures of Khaosz Kapitany

The adventures of Khaosz Kapitany

The Adventures of Khaosz Kapitany is the craze of our Sunday nights at Tilos – as it has been for 7 years. The general concept of the show is to gather rare music, sounds, voices and use the characteristics of the studio space – with its gadgets, and Sunday-night hangers around reading auspicious texts to create strange atmospheres.

The present compilation is a mix of music by Nino Rota, Felix Kubin, Sam and the Pharaoes, Alice Coltrain, Albert Einstein Commitee, Ganja Cru, Stock Hausen and Walkman, together with sound fragments picked from old horror videos, radio soap operas and avantgarde poetry with some instrumentral improvisation by Hungarian band leader Dr.Marias. This part is a sample from their special “Menza Brothers – Dadaist Culture Revue” – live instruments, with record manipulation and effects – and two voices reading-yelling found texts – with Khaosz Kapitany at the controls.
Beware… mostly in Hungarian.
OK, basically, it takes you through the purgatory, and …. let’s see what happens at the end.

Show 042: International Language Course from Beginner to Master by Antal Vida

International Language Course from Beginner to Master
-useful soundsculpture for natives of foreign civilizations

Artist: Antal Vida / vidatoni
Radio: Radio Tilos/Radio Tordas
Year: 2006
Total Time: 56:16
:: no jingle ::

It is a great challenge for a sound-sculptor usually juggling with words and sentences to produce a mix that is enjoyable for listeners of any mother-tongue. This is why in the first five minutes you are taught some Hungarian, then you get to the advanced level. I promise you get to the level of a native speaker in an hour! Naturally, the information is filled into your brain in brotherly portions, and in every five minutes you are taken for a face wash in the music of the most refreshing European languages.

Vidatoni is a sound artist, doing both talkradio and radioart in Tilos. He is also running his very own small community radio (Radio Tordas) from his livingroom in his home village near Budapest, while his garden houses the only local cinema in the neighbourhood, making it one of the most enviable ones at that. Yes, indeed, he has the kind of rare ability to make people speak the same language.

Show 013: Exotic Jam – are you hungary?

What happens when you get a bunch of people living in Hungary in a studio? Well sit down and LISTEN, there are further questions.

What may come from a country as representation of local art? Yes, you’ve got special local art, more specifically local then universal, and knowing certain patterns typical of a region instantly helps you recognise where it is from. And you’ve got local versions of international trends. Our RADIA network itself provides a great variety of answers to these questions, just browse through the types of shows, their origins and their themes, languages.

Minor languages, smaller language-communities – once taken out of their isolation – have always needed to interpret what is going around them in different languages, and naturally, the outside communication is almost for sure in a major language. And then you have foreigners who feel like crossing the – already disappearing – national boundaries, and settle down in a small country, bringing a fresh experience and a new outlook on a city.

What is a nation at the turn of the 21st century, and what is it that a small nation officially communicates about herself – as a newly joined EU country – these still don’t necessarily cover each other properly.

At the time of communism, black people – due to the great solidarity for people oppressed by the West ha ha – could come to study in Eastern Europe typically at universities such as Medical and Technical, some stayed here, and had families, some went back, but there is a growing number of young black people, and typical community groups and locales appearing – as everywhere minority groups are in the formation.

Gimmeshot hip hop crew was officially formed in 2000, gathering MC’s and bringing up DJ’s around DJ Mango – aka producer Modul – who’s been backing up local and international MC’s and poets with beats and records for more than a decade. Another portion of the crew’s momentum is gathered from Afro-Hungarian MC queen Sena (recent cooperations with DJ Vadim (UK), DJ Spider (F)), and MC Kemon, the Caribbean football bass-wordbouncer (recently featured on Cay Taylan’s EP), not to forget about big beatboxer Busa, a favourite of local jazz and folk musicians. Resonance listeners could already have a taste of them at last year’s Radio Art Riot as the band backing Canadian spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan, as members are active in different formations from several musical instruments to bigger eclectic setups. And if an international artist comes to visit Budapest – as you can see it from the cooperation list – they seem to be ready to take the challenge, so this is the time to listen to the local source.

This special show is introduced and closed by a live project of Busa with folk musicians, called Zuboly, featuring Hungarian “unplugged folk bootlegs”. The studio jam is produced by Mango and Polski, and the heart of the studio, Elm, together with the three above mentioned vocal beat gals and bwoys.

They are no kings and queens really, just a happy street family.

Take a trip with them.
