Tilos

Independent community radio Tilos (meaning “forbidden”) is one of the hotbeds of contemporary cultural cooperation and transmission in Budapest, a bastion of cultural diversity with its vast variety of talk and music programmes running for 24 hours. Having started as a pirate radio station in 1991 (hence its name), it received its first legal frequency for 12 hours daily in 1995, and has provided a platform and an open mic for socially conscious artists and activists ever since. It did much for the acceptance of alternative civilian and artistic values, and paved the way for and provided the lacking alternative language and topics that are now getting reshaped in youthful commercial media.
