Radio Theory

Members of Radia are interested in theoretical matters. As a network of independent radio stations, radio projects and engaged individuals we propose to act as:

• A repository of information
• A lively hub of discussion and debate
• An ideas lab

WHY RADIO?
In the course of our blossoming interrelationship, let’s try and find out.
An opening salute: Because it is a medium through which “art and the people can be reconciled with each other”?
(Taken from a quote by Guillaume Apollinaire)
Maybe you want to read more about this statement? Or perhaps you want to contribute your own ideas?

WHY RADIA?
When we were searching for our name, it was clear that some of us were stimulated by, or had already begun to form an artistic response to the Futurist manifesto: La Radia. To locate ourselves somewhere other than in a historical art movement, and to symbolize our distance from the unsavoury aspects of Futurism, we dropped the La. Radia is simply radio in some languages; it also seems like it could be the feminine or plural of radio. (Internally we have affectionately taken to addressing each other as radiators!)

WHY NOW?
In the wake of newer forms of broadcast technology, radio is becoming visible afresh. In this case it is immediately obvious how well old and new technologies compliment each other: radio lending vitality, content and locality to the internet and the internet lending global connectivity, on demand access and a powerful archiving tool to radio. Aside from the current tendency towards artistic radio projects, many more groups are fighting for radio licences. More artists now have access to the airwaves than ever before.
